3D / Puff
3D puff embroidery is a technique where foam is inserted under your design to raise it and give a 3-dimensional effect to your embroidery.
Neon
Embroidery with neon threads is exactly like normal embroidery, although the threads are dyed with high sheen polyester dyes. Color options are limited to standard neon colors.
Metallic
Metallic thread is created with fine metallic particles, providing a unique shine to your designs. The most popular colors are gold, silver, copper, rose gold and bronze.
Rush Embroidery Orders: Rush embroidery options are available depending on the size and complexity of your order, as well as the requested turn around times. Our standard turnaround time is 10–14 days, but rush options are available when needed. Our account reps are on stand by Monday – Friday 9 am to 5:30 pm PST to help with any last minute rush order requests. We pride ourselves on quick turnaround times but never sacrifice speed for quality.
Embroidery Tips
We’ve created this guide to assist you in estimating the number of stitches your design will require. Please note these are all approximations, to provide an idea based on the line weight and size of your design. We are only able to give exact stitch counts after a design has been digitized.
Text Size
- Avoid very small letters — embroidered text may not stay legible.
- Keep text at least 0.25″ tall and 0.05″ thick. 0.05″ is also the minimum line thickness for a regular satin stitch; anything thinner is stitched as a run stitch (a single line of stitches).
- Measure text in Illustrator with the measuring tool, or convert the font point size to inches under File > Preferences > Units > General > Inches.
- 0.25″ is roughly 36pt, which also carries the thickness needed — though that depends on the font, so we recommend simple fonts.
Backgrounds
- Account for underlay stitches when calculating stitch count.
- Balance the background density — too few stitches leaves sparse coverage, too many looks dense and bulky.
- Most background areas want 6–12 stitches per inch (SPI), or 2–5 per centimeter (SPC).
Design
- Simplify intricate designs and patterns, especially where they carry fine details or small text.
- Embroidery may not replicate extremely intricate elements as precisely as a digital image.
- Clean lines and well-defined shapes give better embroidery results.
- Start with high-resolution files, preferably vector, so the design scales without losing quality — and convert any fonts to outlines or paths.
3D / Puff
- Foam thickness affects the design’s visibility and feel on the finished merchandise — experiment with foam heights to find the right balance.
- Use contrasting thread colors against the background fabric so the raise stands out.
- Proper underlay and stitch density are critical for a clean, well-defined finish.
- Bold, simple shapes suit 3D puff best; intricate designs with thin lines don’t translate well.

- Keep it simple: avoid intricate designs that might not translate well to embroidery. Remember, embroidery is best suited for simple and bold designs.

Stitch Estimate Grid
How the grid works
Shown here is a 4″ x 4″ grid broken down into 0.25″ squares. Each 0.25″ block is approximately 65 stitches if filled in completely. Each 1″ (or sixteen 0.25″ blocks) would be approximately 1,000 stitches if completely filled in. Completely filled in means there is no negative space remaining and your design takes up the whole area. If a 1″ block is only half or 50% filled in, it would only require approximately 500 stitches.

Worked examples
Stitch Estimate Without Grid
An approximation of stitches can be found with this equation:
Multiply Width × Height × 1,000 = Total Approx. Stitches
Example: 1.5″ W × 2″ H logo (1.5 × 2 × 1,000 = 3,000). This logo would have approximately 3,000 stitches.
Tips to follow
- Each letter at 0.25″ in height = approximately 100 stitches.
- Letters should be no smaller than 0.25″ for optimum clarity.
- If a logo has a drop shadow, add 200 stitches per inch.
- Remember this rule of thumb: drop shadows are usually equal to two times the number of stitches for each letter with a drop shadow.
- There may be other factors that affect your stitch count, such as fabric type, color or the intricacies of your logo.
- If parts of the design go outside the grid box, figure the percentage of the fill and add it to your total estimation. In other words, if your extra box is only half full, add 250 stitches to your final estimate.

Can custom embroidery and screen printing be added to the same garment?
Absolutely, the mix of services can create a very unique look on your custom garment. The layers offer additional dimension to your garment. Another great use of mixed services is adding an embroidered logo.
What types of fabrics are best suited for embroidery?
Lightweight natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, and silk are well suited for machine embroidery, while heavier fabrics like denim and canvas are better for hand embroidery. Canvas and other heavy fabrics require thicker needles and stronger thread.
What is the difference between hand and machine embroidery?
Hand embroidery is done by hand using needles and thread, while machine embroidery is accomplished by a computer-controlled machine that stitches the design into fabric. Hand embroidery is generally more time-consuming, but offers better control and flexibility in the design. Machine embroidery is faster and easier to use, but may require more expensive equipment.
Is there a color limit with embroidery?
No, the only color limitations are found in tonal shifts. Embroidery is only possible with solid colors. If you're looking for a high level of complex detail, a service like DTG might be better suited for your needs.
Is digitizing extra?
No! We don't charge additional fees, everything is included.
How much do digitizing services cost?
Digitizing services typically cost between $20-60 but we offer our clients free digitizing services.
Can embroidery thread be pantone matched?
Unfortunately no, we cannot pantone match thread. However, we do have a massive library of threads to choose from. If you are still looking for a flawlessly matched thread to your garment, we suggest dying your garment to match the thread.
What are the care instructions for custom embroidery?
