What Is Screen Printing?
Screen printing pushes ink through a fine mesh screen, one screen per color, to lay down bold, opaque, durable spot color that pops on both light and dark garments. It is the most cost-effective way to decorate at volume — and the best canvas for specialty inks and effects.
- Bold, opaque color on light and dark garments
- Up to 9 colors per design, no setup fees
- The best value for medium and large runs
Pro Tip: Send vector files or high-resolution designs with each color separated — it keeps your spot colors crisp. Not sure? Your rep will prep the screens for you.
Water-Based vs. Plastisol vs. Specialty
Every project has a best ink. Water-based and discharge soak in for a super-soft feel, plastisol sits on top for bold opaque color, and specialty inks add texture and shine. Not sure which fits? Talk to an account rep.

Screen Printing: Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Haven't found what you are looking for? Email or contact us and we'd be happy to assist.
Is there a color limit with screen printing?
For most of our screen-printing techniques we offer up to 9 colors per design. If your project needs more, DTG or water-based transfer printing may be the better fit — your rep can help you choose.
Are there setup fees with screen printing?
No. There are no additional setup fees in our pricing — everything is included, with wholesale pricing that improves at volume.
Do you save my screens for reorders?
Yes. We save your screens at our Downtown Los Angeles headquarters, so when you reorder you usually will not need a screen remade.
Can I get a sample before a full run?
Yes. We offer samples and pre-production samples before a full production run, and we highly recommend ordering one.
What ink types do you offer?
Water-based and discharge for soft prints, plastisol for bold opaque color, plus specialty inks: puff, high-density, silicone stretch, reflective 3M, metallic, foil, and flock.
What is the difference between water-based and plastisol?
Water-based ink soaks into the fabric for a super-soft print with no hand feel after a wash. Plastisol sits on top of the fibers for a bold, opaque, durable print that pops on dark garments. Your rep will recommend the right one.
Can you screen print on activewear and dark garments?
Yes. We have mastered printing on spandex, leggings, and synthetic activewear with stretch inks that will not crack — and plastisol and high-density inks give bold, opaque results on dark garments.
Can you screen print hats?
No. Curved, structured cap crowns do not take screen print cleanly — screen printing is a flat-panel, body-of-garment method. For headwear we use embroidery, 3D puff, chain-stitch, chenille and woven patches, and water-based transfers for full-color designs. See our custom hats and water-based transfer pages.
