The future of apparel printing

What Is DTG Printing?

Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing prints your design straight onto the fabric with specialized inkjet technology and water-based textile inks that are absorbed into the fibers of the garment. The result is a soft-hand, full-color print with photographic detail — perfect for complex designs, gradients, and single pieces or small runs. We print on white and color cotton garments, using pre-treatment to keep colors vivid on darks.

  • Unlimited colors and photographic detail in a single pass
  • No costly setup fees and minimums starting at one piece per design
  • Perfect for single pieces, small runs, and full-color designs

Pro Tip: For the best results, send your design as a transparent PNG at a minimum of 300 DPI (600 DPI is even better), cropped tight to the design with no empty margins.

DTG vs. screen printing

Is DTG Better than Screen Printing?

They are two wildly different services — it is not really accurate to call one better than the other. DTG is unbeatable for full-color, photographic, low-quantity work; screen printing wins on bold, high-volume runs and specialty inks. Not sure which fits your project? Talk to an account rep.

Set Your DTG Print Up for Success

DTG printing uses the CMYK color space, so exact Pantone matching is not possible — but we get as close as we can and triple-check every order. Follow these specs and your print will come out crisp and vivid.

File Format PNG (RGB) or PSD (CMYK) — transparent background for color garments
Resolution 300 DPI minimum (600 DPI for best results)
Fabric Type 75–100% cotton
Max Design Size 13"W × 15"H

Crop tight: remove any empty margins or whitespace around the design — files should be cropped tight to it. Print sizes are scaled proportionally to the size of the garment.

FAQ

What is direct-to-garment printing?

DTG is a printing technique that uses specialized inkjet technology and water-based inks that are absorbed into the fibers of the fabric. Unlike a transfer, the image is printed directly onto the garment, so the result is soft to the touch and full color.

What does DTG mean?

DTG is an acronym for direct-to-garment printing — ink is dispensed onto the shirt like a giant computer printer, only instead of printing on paper, it prints on the garment.

What can DTG machines print on?

DTG works best on garments that are at least 75% cotton, and 100% cotton gives the most vivid results because natural fibers absorb the ink best. For non-cotton blends we can produce a strike-off sample first so you can see how it prints.

How durable is DTG printing?

DTG prints are highly durable. With the right fabric and proper care, prints can last 15-25 washes or more. Wash inside out, tumble dry on cool or air dry, and avoid bleaching agents and excessive direct sunlight to keep colors vivid.

What fabrics work best with DTG printing?

DTG looks best on light-colored, high-cotton fabric. We can print on dark garments using a pre-treatment, though darks generally print a little less vivid than lights. Garments should be 75-100% cotton for the best result.

How much does DTG printing cost?

Unlike screen printing, there are no setup costs with DTG, and minimums start at one piece per design. Pricing depends on the garment, print size, and quantity — reach out to an account rep for a detailed quote.

What are the benefits of DTG printing?

DTG produces full-color prints quickly and cost-effectively, handles intricate designs and detailed images that screen printing cannot, and offers great flexibility with quick turnaround and no setup fees — ideal for single pieces and small runs.
